The book “Angola: The Ideological Dimension of Education 1975-1992”, by Laurindo Vieira (2007), published by Editorial Nzila, critically analyses the evolution of the Angolan educational system from the colonial period to the early years of the Second Republic. The author demonstrates how education was used as an instrument of cultural homogenisation, ideologisation, and nation-state building, linking political, social, and economic factors. Organised into four chapters, the work addresses colonial education and its discriminatory nature; post-independence educational reforms, marked by the ideology of the Party-State and the national literacy campaign; the impacts of the civil war and socio-economic conditions on schooling; and the relationship between education and cultural homogenisation in state building. This critical review highlights the book’s merits — broad historical contextualisation, consistent theoretical grounding, and in-depth analysis — and points out as a limitation the absence of a prospective perspective to overcome the challenges identified. Despite its publication date, the book remains fully relevant, as it addresses issues that continue to shape the educational debate in Angola, such as inequality in access, political influence in schools, and tensions between national identity and cultural diversity.
