The Name: Cultural Identity of the Ovimbundu People

: Addressing the name in Umbundu, considering its application, involves looking at the importance it represents for the Ovimbundu culture. Thus, the analysis seeks to clarify the situation in light of the successive errors related to the Umbundu spelling used in the Civil Registry Offices in Angola. These names, of Bantu-African nature, have been altered based on Portuguese spelling and/or the writing imposed by the Catholic and Evangelical religions. The authorities in these locations are unaware of and/or neglect the spelling of the alphabet of national languages. Therefore, this study arises with the aim of analyzing the names of the Ovimbundu, based on the alphabet of the national languages approved by the Council of Ministers in 1987, and the harmonization of the spelling of the Bantu languages of Angola. Throughout the study, it will be understood that a name is identity; it belongs to the person and should not be graphically altered. If it is changed, it loses its meaning and originality.
